Trauma Therapy

Does The Pain Of The Past Still Control Your Present Life?

Does Living With Unresolved Trauma Deprive You Of Joy And Connection?

  • Do you struggle with the emotional and psychological effects of unresolved trauma?

  • Is it difficult for you to trust others and develop meaningful relationships?

  • Are symptoms—such as anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, irritability, or shame—negatively impacting how you move through the world?

Whether your trauma stems from childhood experiences, abuse, neglect, a sudden loss, violence, relational betrayal, or other distressing life events, perhaps you often feel overwhelmed, stuck, or on high alert. Living with the aftermath of trauma can make even routine tasks like getting out of bed or going to work feel exhausting.

The Effects Of Trauma Are Far-Reaching

Trauma can have a profound impact on every aspect of daily functioning, including:

  • Emotionally: you may experience mood swings, irritability, or numbness and have difficulty feeling joy or safety;

  • Cognitively: you could struggle with concentration, memory, and decision-making, leading to issues at work or school;

  • Physically: trauma can cause chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, chronic muscle tension, headaches, and other stress-related symptoms;

  • Socially: you might withdraw from friends and family, feeling disconnected or misunderstood, or may avoid social situations due to anxiety or fear of being triggered;

  • Relationally: trauma may show up as conflict, disconnection, or difficulty with boundaries and trust.

Additionally, other symptoms, such as panic attacks, flashbacks, and hypervigilance, may cause ongoing disruption and distress you don’t know how to manage. Worst of all, you may feel broken inside and lose all hope you’ll ever be able to change.

Fortunately, trauma therapy is available to help you process your life experiences and learn effective ways of coping. With a supportive and compassionate therapist guiding your recovery, you can overcome the effects of trauma holding you back.

Our Culture Perpetuates Trauma

In today’s world, factors that contribute to trauma are never in short supply. Systemic issues like racism, discrimination, and social inequality can create ongoing stress and feelings of powerlessness, especially among marginalized communities. Trauma can also be exacerbated by historical factors, such as intergenerational trauma in Indigenous and immigrant communities and societal norms that minimize or invalidate certain experiences.

Amid this backdrop, the pressures of perfectionism and productivity coupled with a lack of mental health awareness can make us feel isolated or unsupported. Unfortunately, outdated stigmas around mental health that reinforce feelings of shame or inadequacy can prevent us from seeking help when we need it most.

Why It Can Be Difficult To Overcome The Effects Of Trauma On Our Own

Many of us struggle to overcome trauma because we focus on treating the symptoms—such as anxiety, anger, or sadness—without addressing the underlying issues that caused them. However, addressing symptoms will only provide temporary relief if the underlying trauma remains unresolved. Without the right support and tools, we may rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms or suppress our emotions, which can prevent true healing.

The good news is that therapy can help you safely examine the origins of trauma. With a better understanding of the impacts of complex trauma, you can learn helpful coping strategies—like mindfulness techniques and somatic therapy—that foster healing.

Trauma Therapy Provides The Tools For Recovery

If you’ve suffered in silence due to the emotional pain brought about by trauma, you may have reached a breaking point. Perhaps you’ve tried coping for long enough and are now seeking professional guidance to begin the healing process. If so, you’ve come to the right place.

At The Therapy Group, our counsellors offer trauma-informed care, ensuring we move at a comfortable pace and that you get to guide the process. Whether your recovery is focused on a one-time incident or complex trauma that occurred over a prolonged timeframe, counselling will be a safe and supportive space to explore your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or shame. With trauma therapy, you can rebuild trust in yourself and others, strengthen relationships, and develop healthier coping strategies.

What To Expect In Sessions

In ongoing sessions, we will explore the root causes of trauma, including past experiences and how these memories influence current behaviors and emotions. Your therapist will help you better understand your trauma symptoms, such as anxiety or avoidance, and how they affect daily life, relationships, and self-esteem.

We work collaboratively with you to identify long-term goals focused on healing, self-empowerment, and developing healthier coping mechanisms. These goals will be determined based on your values, desires for growth, and the specific challenges you face, ensuring that progress is meaningful and achievable at your pace.

The Modalities We Incorporate Into Trauma Treatment

Our team is comprised of counsellors who specialize in evidence-based approaches to treating the symptoms of trauma. Drawing from various effective strategies, we can help you master coping skills, improve self-awareness, and regain control over your life. Based on your needs and preferences, we may employ the following techniques:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR): Through targeted approaches and techniques, EMDR therapy can help you process distressing memories, reframe negative beliefs, and reduce the emotional charge around traumatic experiences.

  • Mindfulness Practices: Utilizing mindfulness techniques to stay grounded in the present, deep breathing exercises to reduce anxiety, and grounding methods to manage intense emotions, you can master simple yet effective ways to cope.

  • Somatic Therapy: Because trauma lives in the body as well as the mind, we provide psychoeducation about the nervous system that allows you to more keenly notice where in your body you feel stress and what instances trigger the fight-flight-freeze response.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Additionally, we work on cognitive reframing to shift negative thought patterns, quiet critical self-talk, and build emotional resilience.

We want you to know that healing is possible. Trauma does not define you—with the right support, you can regain control over your life. We hope you leave sessions with practical skills and strategies to manage symptoms and promote healing. Over time, you can experience reduced anxiety, improved emotional regulation, more stable relationships, and a sense of peace you thought was unattainable.

You May Be Interested In Trauma Therapy But Have More Questions…

I had a bad experience with previous childhood trauma counselling—how will therapy with you be different?

At The Therapy Group, we understand how important finding the right trauma therapist is. When you contact us, your initial touchpoint will be with our client coordinator who spends time finding out about you to ensure you’ll be matched with the best trauma counsellor based on your needs and preferences. We elicit feedback along the way to ensure you’re satisfied and, if not, we’re flexible and open to switching therapists for you.

Will trauma therapy be confidential?

We understand that confidentiality is a significant concern, and we want to reassure you that your privacy is our top priority. Everything you share with us in trauma therapy will be kept confidential, and we follow strict ethical and legal guidelines to protect your personal information. There are only a few exceptions where confidentiality might need to be broken, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others. However, we would always discuss these situations openly with you beforehand.

Won’t talking about childhood trauma in therapy make things worse?

Our approach is to work with you at your own pace, and we will never push you to discuss anything before you're ready. Talking through trauma with someone you trust helps reduce its emotional charge, making it easier to process and heal. We use gentle, trauma-informed techniques that prioritize your safety and comfort, allowing you to explore your experiences in a way that feels manageable and empowering.
